Let's meet some of the terrific people that make Normandin Middle School a GREAT place to learn:

Ms. Briggs - Health Education

1.  I have completed a 100-mile race and I am in traning for #2!
2.  The only thing I love more than running is being a teacher.
3.  I love sleepovers at my moms with my two nieces, which occur almost every weekend.
4.  I am in process of completing my goal of running a marathon in every state.  Yes, I am a marathon maniac.
5.  I have lived in 3 countries and 15 states.  I used to hate being in one place too long.  Too bad I did not run marathons when I lived in each of the states.  I would be almost done.

Ms. Rodriguez - Grade 8 Social Studies

1.  I went to Point Barrow Alsaka, in 2007, on a survival trip where I hunted caribou and seals.  Was immersed in the Inupiaq culture for 7 days eating seal and whale blubber.
2.  I stayed at Mount Vernon for a week during a teacher's institute, in both 2006 and 2008, where I was given the honor of changing the wreath on George Washington's tomb.
3. I am the family animal advocacy center: Four dogs, two Mccaws and an Arican Grey, oh plus a temporary cat.
(By the way, they are never temporary)
4. I have four grandsons, the oldest is 22 and has just joined the National Guard and the youngest is 6.  (I started when I was five)
5. Quit school and worked the graveyard shift at the mills when I was 16.  My job was, believe it or not, painting the soles of shoes with a 1/2 inch paintbrush. (Don't try this at home)  Since I couldn't stay within the lines, constantly getting  paint on the sides of the shoes, my services were no longer required. Tried other factory work, such as cloth inspector but it was way too exciting and glamorous.  So instead I decided to teach.

Irish Leader Visits Normandin

Ireland's Sinn Fein leading member Pat Doherty visited Normandin Middle School on Friday March 15, 2013. He spoke to our eighth-graders from Pod 8-1 about the struggle for Northern Ireland's independence. Mr. Doherty took the time to answer ALL student questions and spent 1 on 1 time with students for more in-depth discussion after the event. The visit reflected a truly authentic way to bring our social studies curriculum to life, while learning first hand about another countries struggles for independence. We are very proud of our students and their ability to ask rigorous questions and participate in intelligent conversations with our guests.

We would like to thank the following guests for taking the time to visit Normandin and particpate in this very special event:

  • Mrs. Doherty
  • School Committee members Dr. Fletcher & Dr. Finnerty
  • Director of Mathematics Dr. Bonneau
  • Director of Federal & State Funded Programs Mr. Andrew O'Leary

A special thank you to Mr. Donnelly for organizing the event, along with Pod 8-1 teachers Ms. Sanders, Mr. Rosen, Ms. Freitas and Ms. St. Amand! Ms. Hinkley and students did an awesome job setting up the library to model a true "town hall" venue. Thank you to Ms. Aubertine for providing a wonderful spread of food and home baked goodies for our guests. Our custodial team's efforts were unmatched in preparing for our guests-nice job.

Read more about the visit in the column by Mr. Steve Urbon here:  South Coast Today

Heading for Greatness

As we move forward on our journey from being a Good school, to one that is Great, it is important we take time to celebrate the outstanding accomplishments of our students.  The Heading for Greatness breakfast is held each quarter, rewarding all students who attain grades of B's or better and/or have perfect attendance.  Parents, guardians and families attend the breakfast and we have our own Jr. National Honor Society members as guest speakers and hosts. We also have successful seniors from NBHS, who were Normandin alum, speak to our 8th graders and answer questions from students and parents about the high school experience.

Congratulations to our grade 6, 7 and 8 students who were honored this week! Thank you to Ms. Aubertine and to our friends at Gear Up Carly & Brooke for your help organizing the program and to all our parents and guardians who were able to participate.  A special thank you to Ms. Hendrikson and our Jr. National Honor Society students and to Ms. Cetenich at NBHS for sending us 2 outstanding guest speakers.  Assistant Principal's Mr. Pacheco, Ms. Murphy and Mr. Farrell were outstanding master's of ceremonies.  The breakfast spread was delicious thanks to our terrific cafeteria staff-thank you too!
