This Week in Pictures at Normandin MS

National Teacher Appreciation Week:
This week marked Teacher Appreciation week across our great nation.  Although we truly appreciate our great teachers across the country all 52 weeks, this is a special time to say thank you.  At Normandin our teachers received several "surprises" throughout the week from our leadership team as a token of our appreciation.  Our wonderful PTO parents organized an "appreciation" lunch on Friday for teachers.  Thank you to our PTO leadership Jayme Brunette-President, Lucy Renauld - Treasurer and Michelle Avelar- Secretary for your kind thoughts.
Teachers: Thank You for Helping our Students BLOOM!
Ms. Aubertine individually prepared these flowers for our staff & they were hand delivered by administrators-thank you!

Thank You, from the Principal:
Dear Normandin Teachers,

This week is National Teacher Appreciation week and an appropriate time for me to share how much I appreciate what you do.  When I think of this year’s staff the following quote by Nelson Mandela comes to mind -“The greatest glory in living lies not in never falling, but in rising every time we fall.”  I believe it represents the tremendous resiliency in you, our teachers, the backbone of our school.  Although we came into the year with less staff, more students and extremely high expectations, you battled through adversity displaying courage, enthusiasm and a sense of urgency that was emulated by our students.

Our students may not remember every essay they write, or every problem they solve, but they will always remember the positive impact that a caring, compassionate and dedicated teacher made on their lives.  As principal, I will never forget the opportunity you have provided me, the support you have given me, and the many memories we have shared.   I appreciate you all tremendously and value your hard work in the most difficult, yet fulfilling of all professions, teacher.

Respectfully,

Bill

Pod 8.1 Studies Divergent

Students in Pod 8.1 discussed the book Divergent in ELA classes, while having it as a focus in their science lessons in an inter-disciplinary unit.  The Pod took a trip together to see the movie and compare it to the book.  A great time was had by all.  Thank you to Pod 8.1 teachers and especially to Ms. Singer for making the transportation, movie and meal plans.

Normandin's Week in Review

Normandin Students Present at Stonehill College

On Thursday, April 17th, seven of our dedicated and hard working Normandin students represented our 21st Century program at Stonehill College during the Southeast Regional Conference.  Aliana Liz Tavares HR 224, Ema Abi-Younes HR 321, Sammy Abi-Younes HR 213, Damian Ramos HR 313, Delilah Oliveira HR 215, Kenneth Roark HR 129, and Quinten Simas HR 270, all did a fantastic job presenting two of our current 21st Century Program offerings to a very full auditorium at Stonehill.

Our students enrolled in the Rube Goldberg club with Mr. DiStefano successfully created a very complicated machine with the objective of completing the “simple” task of raising a flag.  This demonstration was shown to the large crowd at Stonehill College.  Students then did a great job describing the process and persistence involved in the creation of their machine and were able to answer several questions from those in attendance.

Our Discovering Justice students in Mr. Rosen’s program session have been working with a group of volunteer attorneys each week in preparation for their presentation before an Appellate Panel of Judges at Bristol Superior Court on Thursday, May 15th.  Students will use legal precedent to argue for their client’s position in a Fourth Amendment Constitutional law case and they will present their oral arguments in front of actual judges.  This group of students did an outstanding job effectively describing the objectives of their program and the importance of after school programming.

Our Normandin students received several compliments from other district coordinators as well as the event organizer.  We are all very proud of their efforts.  Thank you Mr. Martins for all your efforts!

NBHS Academy of Engineering Visits Normandin:
In an effort to involve more females in STEM opportunities at NBHS, Academy of Engineering Coordinator Mr. Bob Gadbois coordinated an amazing event for our 8th grade girls.  Thank you to Ms. Aungst and our outstanding students for taking part in this event.  Mr. Gadbois said about the event "I just wanted to extend my gratitude for allowing us to speak with your 8th grade girls Monday about the Academy of Engineering. Your staff, especially Ms. Aungst, were most gracious and cooperative and as a result, the event was a huge success. The girls were most attentive and had a great time making their little "Bristle Bots".  Thanks again and I look forward to working with your staff in the future."  Mr. Gabois has been extremely involved in working with Normandin and our students, thank you!

Intramural Basketball Championship:
Our students were fortunate enough to take part in a basketball intramural program run by Mr. Griffin and Mr. Cornaglia.  Students were on teams and played weekly, culminating in an amazing champions match up between the Celtics vs. Thunder. Great game kids had a ball. Celtics won and received "we are Thunder" t-shirts which were donated to the intramural program.  Thank you Gear Up for sponsoring the program!
